Library Day & Recipe Books

This summer we are working on getting reading in EVERY day.  It is a great pleasure for Tiffany who would rather read than ....well really anything else.  But for Gavin it is a little more difficult.  He rather do any number of things instead of read.  However his teacher for next year really wants him to read this summer so we are incorporating it into our summer calendar.

Library day is every Tuesday. Gavin gets to peruse all the books on the shelves at our local library for about 30 minutes and then selects a few books to check out.  While I really wish they were reading level appropriate and a subject matter that he will enjoy, I allow him to choose the books.
(Don't worry Kristi loaned me several age/level appropriate books that we read a chapter a day.)

Last time we were at the library he focused in on this book.

It is a how-to book about making different desserts with Twinkies.  (Of course we had to stop at the store to get the ingredients to make one of these delicious recipes.)
Here is the crazy part.  Gavin had NO IDEA what a Twinkie was.  I described it to him on the way home.  Then I told him how whenever my Mom went out of town, and my Dad was in charge of us, he would take us to the store and to buy Twinkies and Poptarts.

Gavin grinned, laughed, looked into my eyes and said "What's a Poptart?"

Crazy!! Maybe that's a really good sign that he doesn't know what these processed food items are. He just needs to be familiar with fruits 'n vegetables and he's set!

Thanks for commenting Jocelyn!

I agree it is not all bad that he doesn't know about Twinkies and Poptarts. But, it was such a fun happy childhood memory for me that in a way I feel like he missed something. Maybe I just miss it. When will Grandma go out of town again so Granddad and I can go shopping?

I have since rectified the situation with Gavin and bought some Poptarts. :)
