Berries

Gavin came home yesterday from school and as our usual conversation unfolded there was a slight twist.  As we entered into the kitchen I said "Get a snack.  Make sure one is a fruit or vegetable. Then get your 30 minute break."  We started instituting a 30 minute free time right after school.  It gives him time to unwind, play with Legos, or watch a show.  Then the homework is more productive.

"Oh, mom!  Guess what?  I already had a fruit today after lunch.  So I can have 2 snacks that aren't healthy."

"Really?" I say questioning, "Did someone bring a healthy snack to school?"

"I had berries at recess.  You know from the tree."

"What?" I stop what I am doing to inquire. "Did your teacher give them to you?"

"No.  I found them myself" states Gavin proudly.

"Gavin, you cannot eat eat berries from trees and bushes unless you know they are not poisonous.  It could really hurt your stomach."

"Oh." he replies thinking about it. "Maybe that is why my tummy kinda hurts."

Gavin brought home the berries today.

Ah! Goofy kid. Do you know if they were poisonous or not?

sheesh. Don't you wish sometimes the conversations that you've had over and over with the older kids would just come pre-known to the younger ones? Glad he's ok :) Funny boy!

I know right! I was thinking that I was sure we had this conversation with him...maybe that was the don't touch spiders conversation. (chuckle)

It was a Mullberry tree, so the berries are actually edible. Thank heaven!
