This Is Marissa...Finishing Strong

When I sign up to run a marathon, in my mind I consider the best case finishing scenario.  To me it is to have done the training, planning and running to make it possible to finish strong.  It is also part of the mantra that runs through my mind on the actual day of the marathon, as I hit the miles above 20 heading in toward the finish line.  Finish Strong.

As the end of the school year rolls around it is a continual battle to keep the kids focused on their grades.  Of course SENIORITIS is in full bloom--and has been since January, along with the tiring out that happens after working on grades for 9 months.

Four years ago, Jocelyn was graduating and we realized that she could have earned a scholarship called the Utah Regent Scholarship, if we had only known about it.  Marissa and I set a goal for her to earn the Utah Regent Scholarship. It was a lofty goal.  Marissa has been battling every semester to earn it.  It requires 4 years of English, Math and Science, 2 consecutive years of a foreign language, and a GPA which in essence is straight A's and a couple B grades.  Any grade below a B disqualifies her for the scholarship.  Because of the 4 year requirement, she ended up taking AP stats and Physics during her senior year, honors English classes and had to switch to early morning seminary to make it all fit in her schedule.  (Because graduating from Seminary is also expected at our house.)

It has not been an easy, smooth ride.  Fitting all her activities in while maintaining good grades has required constant vigilance--on both our parts.  She has been Seminary president, Spirit Club President, Yearbook Photography Editor, four-year member of Canta Bella Choir, three-year Special Needs Mutual Counselor, Laurel President and Counselor, swam on the school Swim Team 3 years, worked 15 hours or more at Sonic/Antigravity each week, and made thousands of cupcakes for neighbors, activities and friends.

As of this morning she has done it.  Grades are in, and she has accomplished the task she set out to do four years ago.  With a 3.92 GPA, this girl will graduate with Honors.
Congratulations to my bright, intelligent, beautiful, happy, hard working, amazing girl.  We are so proud of you!  Way to earn a scholarship, graduate from seminary, do your best to help and love others and FINISH STRONG.

Yes, it really is quite the accomplishment. (Nice to have a blog where I can brag about her and not worry about offending others!) sigh.... my big parenting push for grades is over with Rissa! Kinda hard to believe we survived the year with going to two different high schools and early morning seminary and everything else. :) So excited to see you tomorrow!
