About a month ago I had a thought come to me. What if Gavin's school carpool dropped him off and no one was home? Our house phone has an answering machine, and Gavin doesn't play the messages or answer the phone...so what would he do? I decided to teach him how to call my cell phone. I posted my cell number on the pantry door and showed him how to use the house phone to dial it.
Last week I went up to Provo to pickup the kids from EFY and spent the night in a hotel. At about 11:20pm my cell rang and I answered it. "Hello"
"Mommy?" came a meek reply.
"Gavin," I said recognizing his voice."Hey buddy it is late. What is going on?"
"Mommy, I am so tired." He said half crying.
"Why aren't you in bed sweetheart?" There was a pause, then he answered "I don't know."
(As I am sure you're now asking as well) I quaried "Where is Daddy?"
"On his bed, watching TV."
"Let me talk to Daddy." I waited until Gavin made his way into the room where I hear Shawn say "Gavin why are you out of bed? Who are you talking to?"
Gavin's quick reply was "Mommy wants to talk to you."
"Hey, how's it going Shawn? Why won't you let Gavin go to bed?" I say joking. Knowing full well Shawn has been telling him to go to bed for at least 3 hours.
He assures me he is getting him off to bed and all is well.
Fast forward 12 hours.
I am driving back to Saint George I get another call from home.
"Hello, Gavin?" I say.
"Hi Mommy" He says sobbing. "I...(sob) hurt (sob) my finger."
"Oh no. What happened buddy?"
"I caught my finger in two legos and it pinched it and almost bled all over." Gavin cries out his reply.
"Oh, poor guy. Are you ok?" I ask.
"Yes. I just wanted you to know."
"Oh, I am so sorry buddy."
Next comes my obvious question..."Where is Daddy?" followed by what is now Gavin's standard reply. "In the bedroom watching TV."
"Does he know you hurt your finger?"
"Yes. He said I was OK. But it hurts. "
"I am so sorry. I will kiss it when I get home. Can I talk to Daddy?"
As he walks towards the bedroom, I hear Shawn say "Seriously! You called Mommy?"

Safety First
So Gavin was helping me unload the silverware from the dishwasher this morning. There were a few knives to be put away, so he asked me to put them away for him explaining "if your a kid and you see a knife you should let a grown-up get it. So you don't get cut."
"Yep" I responded. "You're a really smart Safety kid Gavin."
"Yeah", says Gavin, "If I see a gun I should not touch it and tell a grown-up. Right mom?"
"Yep Gavin!" I say
"Or" says Gavin "a Dad."
"That's right" I say stifileing a chuckle at the implication that Dad's are not grownups.
"And do you know what else Mom?"
"No, Gav, what?" I reply.
"If you see a bomb you shouldn't lite it. Right?"
Wow I think, that is one dangerous playground for this kid!
Then continuing with his train of thought Gavin says, "Instead of lighting the bomb you should tell a grown up because they know where to throw it."
See a gun tell a grownup or a Dad
See a bomb don't lite it cause the grownups know where to throw it.
