Black Widows and Granddad

We were chatting with Gavin while he ate his Happy Meal.  He was eating as fast as he could so he could resume playing in the play place.  Gavin was interjecting important tidbits into the conversation.  Then we began talking about the playhouse in the backyard.
"We can't play in there because it has a black widow spider in it" comments Gavin.
Shawn responded "We can fix that. When we get home you can show me where you saw it and we'll kill it so you can play in there."
(Gavin has been known to pick up and play with bugs and spiders. So he knows what a Black Widow spider looks like and that they are poisonous.)

Gavin's curiosity is peaked.  "Really?  How do you kill the spider?"
Shawn answers, "Well we could get some spider spray, or I could kill it with a shovel.  We need to see where it is."
"What happens if it bites you?  Do you die?  Or just get really sick?"  Gavin inquires.
"Well" I answer, "It probably wouldn't kill you.  But you'd have to go to the hospital, get an IV and the doctor would have to watch you all night to make sure the medicine works.  It wouldn't be any fun."

Oh," says Gavin thoughtfully.  "I have an idea!  Granddad could come kill it.  That way if he gets bit he can fix his body himself, and no one would need to go to the hospital."

Gavin, always searching for a way to circumvent the problem.

Primary Songs

We realized during this past year's Primary program that Gavin doesn't know most of the words to the Primary songs.  He moves his lips and head, and kinda hums some version of the tune.  Which is incredibly entertaining to more ward members than just our family, but slightly disruptive when the whole bench is shaking because of laughter.

In an effort to help him we have started to sing and teach Primary songs in Family Home Evening.

This week Shawn was out of town and Gavin picked the song Scripture Power.
He sang it for us first.  It went something like this.

"Na nan na na naaaa na,
Na nan na I can,
I'm reading na na na na,
I'm nana nnaaa naa
Scripture Power!  Na na na
Scripture Power is the power na na,
Scripture Power na na na na need.
The na na na Sript nnna need."

We decided to practice all the way to get yogurt and back.  On the way to yogurt I told him he would have to know all the words to the chorus before anyone could have yogurt.  After 10 minutes of sitting in the parking lot, he mostly had it and we went in for FroYo.

After eating, we got back into the car and practiced the first verse all the way home.  When we arrived at the house we had Gavin sing it for us.  He missed at least 2 words in each phrase.  But that was SO much better than an hour earlier.

When I said "Let's all try it one more time".

Gavin said "Why? I already got the yogurt. How about next time you want me to practice you buy me more Frozen Yogurt."

How can I argue with that logic?  Everyone in the car.  Gavin NEEDS to practice his Primary songs.

Fun About Texas

I really look forward to going to Market in January with my mom and sisters.  Texas is a really great state--like a country all it's own.  While we don't have much time for touring and visiting with the locals, here are a couple of the places and things that I enjoy about going to Texas.

Texas Land and Cattle Steak House!  Great steaks, and I love the design of the brand.  I am sure that in Texas this isn't a themed restaurant, but I think of it that way!

The Lighting Hall of Fame.....the step-sister to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame--seriously what is this?

Texas BBQ-- we have a shuttle from the hotel that will take us to get food in the evenings.  This is our driver's favorite place.  And it was really terrific.
Of course the skyline is beautiful-- no one can argue with that.
And then there is our shuttle driver, Vince, who is willing to drive us every back way to speed up our commute.  Including going past the morgue, and the door that receives the bodies.  He was so nice to not only to point it out, but also go back so I could get a picture of it.

And last but not least
Ya'll have a cute accent.
