What the Random?

Yesterday we were passing through Las Vegas and stopped at a KoMex Fusion restaurant.  (Basically a tiny place in a strip mall that serves Korean-Mexican food.  Very good BTW)

As luck would have it Gavin needed to use the bathroom.  We found our way through the tiny hallway and into the bathroom were I keep saying "Don't touch anything".
There was a lot of stuff to look at and Gavin inquired about pretty much everything.
"Why is that hat over there?  What does that button do?  Why did they hang that picture over there?"
Tired of the random questions and thinking more about avoiding diseases I began answering all questions with "I don't know Gavin, why do you think?"  He stopped asking questions for a minute then points to this thing on the wall and says
"I know what that is.  It's the X3 twenty-five hundred.  It makes things smell good."

Mark Goss

I always loved, and still do, hearing my parents tell stories about growing up.  I like to hear from their perspective of 60+ years of life looking back.  It is fun to hear their stories of mischief, hopes, siblings and choices as a teen and child.  The older I get the more I understand that we really are a product of the choices --good and bad--we have made over the years.   A couple months ago I heard a well know psychiatrist say that most people's lives stem from 10 defining moments, 7 critical choices, and 5 pivotal people.  Since then I have been thinking a lot about that.  Of course my decision to marry Shawn--in the temple--was one of my critical choices, but what were the other ones?

About a month ago, I was asked to share an experience in young women of something that I had done that helped someone else.  I was prepared to share a story of when I had helped a sister in our ward, but as I sat, waiting for my turn, the thought came to me that I needed to share a story from when I was a teenager.  As I thought about it more, my mind landed upon the story of Mark Goss.  After sharing some of the story with the YW, I wondered if it could be that this incident is one of my defining moments.  Perhaps I think it is.  With this in mind, I thought I should write it down, at least as near as I can remember it.  Not because I want to show what a good thing I did, but more I think to tell the story of how a decision I made changed the person I have become.

I was 17 years old, and I would describe myself as cute, self confident, smart and very capable.   There were many other girls who were really beautiful, and who wore the coolest clothes, who always knew the right thing to say, and who were really intelligent--but that wasn't me.  My parents had introduced me to many different things in my short lifetime, and I was willing to try any new food, sports game, dance move, change my own car's oil or to speak in front of people.  I didn't consider myself really amazing at any of these things, but I was able, willing and had some natural athletic ability which I assume made it possible.  Most girls I knew were really good at one thing.  They were either really smart, or really good at soccer, and were not willing to be average at anything else.  And thus when an opportunity came to let's say join a community softball team, they declined because they didn't want to look stupid.  I took it as an opportunity to learn to do something better, and to get to know new people and I was usually very willing to look stupid for a while trying to figure it out.  I was also VERY competitive--which has dissipated some what with age--but helped encourage me to step out of my comfort zone and step towards unknown adventures.

My dad had told me stories growing up of going to dances with his friends.  He told me of a few experiences where he would get up the courage, waiting song after song, to ask a girl to dance, only to have her tell him NO.  This story made a big impression on me.  I thought of my father, being turned down, and it made me a little mad that any the girl couldn't take 3 minutes out of her night to dance with him.   So I made a decision that when ever a guy got up the courage to ask me to dance, I would always say yes.

(Bare with me I think I have set up enough background to tell the story I have intended to tell.)

I remember the moment well. It was February of 1986.  I was standing in a circle chatting with about 5 girls from my Young Women on a Sunday after Sunday school.  I was not unpopular in my ward.  My dad had been bishop, and I was one of 4 laurels in my ward and I  believe I was laurel president at the time.  Sunday school had just ended, and we were in the hallway just outside our classroom.  All the YW, probably near 25 girls were in the hallway.  The young men met on another side of the church building so it was basically a "guy free" zone.  I do not remember the topic of conversation, only that I was engrossed enough in it that I did not see what was coming.  I was literally "tapped on the shoulder" and as I turned to see who had done it, I expected to see a leader or a girl.  Instead I was face to face with Mark.

Golfing

Yesterday Shawn and Marissa were discussing the fact that she had never hit a golf ball.  Shawn, a very good golfer in high school, and a lover of the game, decided he had not done his fatherly due diligence.  It resulted in a day at the driving range today.
Taking 4 novices to the driving range on a busy sunny day in Saint George is a little tricky.

First, get the balls and secure a couple driving mats on the outer edge of the range.

Second, a little demonstration and practice swinging.

Add a 7 year old swinging metal club, and your day becomes significantly more exciting.

(Did you see it?)

Thanks to a very patient Shawn, and some kind golfers no people were injured in the making of this adventure!

Merry Christmas

It is usually about this time that I start feeling guilty that I have not sent out Christmas letters to all of our friends and family. This year I thought perhaps instead of mailing out our letter, I would post our Christmas Letter to my blog and link it through Facebook. If your curious and have time on your hands, you can check out what life at our house is like by perusing other posts. (Most recently Christmas Tree Games )

Farris Family 2011

It has been a really fun year for our family full of ups and downs.  I hesitate to write about all the wonderful things, because I know there have been many difficult things for all of us as well.  However, I believe that when we count our blessings and focus on the positive instead of the negative we appreciate more the life that we have been given.

Shawn added 3 more countries to his list this year, Philippines, Hong Kong and Macau.  He is up to 51 countries now--so he is 6 countries ahead of his age.  (His goal is to have visited more countries than he is old.) The law firm of Farris and Utley celebrated it's 12th year and Shawn added another international client from Japan--he's a pro golfer.   Shawn recently was called to be a member of our stake high council, and shaved his beard of 7 years.  (Check out the recent experience Shawn and Gavin had at the post  Why Do You Need That?  )

Jennifer:  I ran 4 Utah marathons--called The Utah Grand Slam-- this year with Kristi (sis-in-law), and some good friends (Surprisingly this is my only picture of it. I am second from the right!). I ran a PR(personal record) during one of them, and had a a lot of fun training with my group of girls.  Shawn and I took a really laid back trip to Vegas this year, and I was able to play with my camera, and take pictures into the early morning hours--to my hearts content (sigh).  It is wonderful to just get away together.  I am serving in the Young Women's organization which is energizing, rewarding and fun.

Jocelyn:
I am currently a Junior at Brigham Young University majoring in Psychology. Over the summer, I was able to nanny for my Uncle Matt's family. It was really fun to get to spend some one-on-one time with his kids while learning more about myself. This past Fall I was able to officially decide and stick with a major (it was an arduous process but I finally decided!). Renee, my roommate from my freshman year and this year too, is one of the few non-LDS students I have met at BYU and is an animation major. I have had a lot of fun getting to see the Church from her eyes and occasionally be a  reference model for her art projects. We are roommates again this Winter in a lovely little house off campus. I'm excited to get to be in a new ward and have some more adventures at the Y.  One of Jocelyn's favorite posts is this one.  Workers Run the World

Marissa is a senior in high school this year. She is extremely busy.  She works part-time as an assistant manager for Anti-gravity (a trampoline facility), is the photography editor for the yearbook, and is spirit club president. She is constantly perfecting her art of cupcake baking and even catered a wedding this year making 340 cupcakes. She is applying to colleges, and filling her time with fun, study, work and friends.  Marissa and Gavin look forward to their "date" about once a month--usually involving Icees and some sort of activity--swimming, trampolines, long-boarding etc....  She and Jocelyn just had a fun sister's weekend in Provo this past month. (Sisters Weekend in Provo

Tiffany is involved in student Ambassadors (similar to student council) at the middle school and is in the 9th grade.  She helps out with Math Counts--a competition math team that she competed in last year, and is helping to judge this year.  She is in National Junior Honor Society, and loves being in seminary.  Tiffany swims with the high school swim team and burns almost 1200 calories at workouts each day.  She comes home from practices exhausted and starving! She LOVES to read, and has a really great sense of right and wrong. (See post Tiffany and The Challenge )

Gavin is in first grade and has a fabulous teacher, Mrs. Gunther.  Because of Gavin's curiosity and ingenuity his teacher devised a behavior scale to help him know what is "appropriate classroom behavior".  Gavin is averaging 5's almost every week (the best score he can get).  He plays often with his good friends Noah and Issac and his favorite after school activity is to dump a huge bucket of Legos on the floor in front of the TV and build things while he listens to Ben Ten shows.  Gavin loves leaving random voice mail messages for Jocelyn, watching and discussing TV aliens and Legos with Tiffany, and riding with Marissa in Fireball (His name for Rissa's car) to get Icees.  There are sooo many posts I could link to Gavin but the girls and I decided on this one.  Phone Calls

We have talked in our family this year about bringing JOY to the season.  J- Jesus Christ  Remembering that he is the reason we celebrate Christmas and his atonement is his gift to us.  O--Others When we serve others and think of them before ourselves we have a greater perspective of what life is about and what is important.  Y- You.  You have to decide for yourself to do what is right and to follow Christ's example.  We can find true JOY, not a fleeting happiness,
when we celebrate and live in this way.
Merry Christmas to all of you this Holiday Season,

The Farris Family.

Walk-a-thon

This year Gavin's school encouraged the kids to earn money for the school by participating in a walk-a-thon.  Basically he called his grandparents, and hit up his parents and sisters for pledges, and then decided that since he asked for dollar amounts-- instead of $ per lap-- he wouldn't have to actually do the walking.  Much to his dismay the walking part was mandatory and was done during his classes PE time.  Here is how he described the experience.
"They made us run around the track.  Not even walk.  We had to do it fast and a lot of times. I was so tired and they wouldn't let me stop.  It was like they had me hooked up to a treadmill to power the electricity at the school."

Gavin is Thankful For...

Gavin brought home a paper today that he had done at school.  He drew 3 things he was thankful for.  Here they are in order of value.

1. Wepins (weapons)  Shawn and I are not quite sure what weapons he is thankful for since we can't think of any that we own.
2. Bate (bait)  We can only assume this ties into number 3--but in the picture it appears he is using someone for the bait...and he does have a sister who likes to wear belts.
3. Bugs  From the illustration we can infer that Gavin is about to grab the bug, and put it to death.  Oh did I say that out loud?  I mean in a jar.

Sister's Weekend in Provo

For Marissa's birthday Jocelyn and I conspired to have a fun "sister's weekend" at BYU.  At first we discussed doing it in November, but schedules and away games narrowed our options to this past weekend.  After we began talking about all the fun things they were going to do, I was jealous that I wasn't going for the fun!  So the girls pacified me with pictures and an occasional commentary via text.

Marissa took the shuttle up from Saint George so they could ride back together in Jocelyn's car after the weekend.  In Springville, where Jocelyn met the shuttle, their adventure began.

They went to Salt Lake City, shopped at the Gateway, tried on clothes from Urban Outfitters, and saw the Christmas lights....

Posed in front of random objects and sent Mom texts about them as though they were especially important.

Had Caramel Apple Cider at Starbucks.

Then went back to Jocelyn's old apartment (She moved into a new one the day before Marissa came, but still had access to her old one.)  Jocelyn made up a slumber party area where they could giggle and laugh until they fell asleep.  (Kinda reminds me of when they were 8 and 6!)

Saturday morning they headed to the BYU bookstore.  (Side story.  On Friday morning I say to Marissa "don't forget to pack your BYU shirt for the game."  She replies "I don't have a BYU shirt." There was a stunned and awkward silence....cricket, cricket.  How did this happen?  Granddad overhears this conversation, palms Marissa a $20 and tells her to make it "right".)
Marissa and Jocelyn find an adorable shirt, suit up and head to the Marriott Center for the basketball game.

Here they are at the game, having a fabulous time together! Marissa gleaned fun ideas for her job as Spirit Club President, and they yelled until their throats were sore.

Since BYU scored more than 80 points they scored at Yogurtland with a free yogurt!

They arrived home on Saturday night, exhausted and laughing about all the fun on their adventure.

...........GO COUGARS!!

Christmas Blitz

Mom and Dad came through Saint George for the CHRISTMAS BLITZ of 2011.  Usually we call this The Christmas Tour, but this year with 24 hours at each family's home it is more of a blitz.

I was amazed at all we got done.  They brought all the gifts for our family--beautifully wrapped as usual.  We shopped for stocking items--while dad replaced my battery in my car and Marissa drove Gdad around town and discussed changing a tire and learning how to change your own oil.  Mom and I found a poinsettia, and grabbed sonic drinks.
At home we made 2 quadruple batches of pralines, discussed republican presidential nominees, attached a wreath to Mom and Dad's car (Christmas tour would not be the same without car decorations), burned a Blitz country Christmas music CD, installed apps on Dad's Droid.
Marissa sent cupcakes with Grandma and Granddad for the Colorado Runyans.
Tiffany and Gdad were able to start the pralines(A Runyan Family Tradition), while Grandma and I ran to the store for more wax paper and better/larger wooden spoons.
Dad instructed me on watching for the proper color and consistency to signal the Pralines are ready to lay out on the wax paper.
Gavin takes one for the team and picks up all the little drips between the pralines.
Mom and Dad were able to stop back through on the way back to Yuma.  Luckily Jocelyn is now home and they were able to see her too!

Before they arrived, Gavin asked me what he and Granddad were going to do. I said Gdad wants to build something with you.  Gavin was thrilled and exclaimed "Does Gdad like to build things as much as I do?"  "I think so Gavin." I replied.  True to Granddad's word, they found time to build a birdhouse and make a couple presents for his sisters.

It was so wonderful to have them come.  It felt like they brought the Christmas spirit with them when they came.  Thanks so much for making all the effort to come see us Mom & Dad!
And then they were off again!!

Proper Handling for the Phone

Gavin hands Shawn his phone as Shawn is walking out the door this morning to work.  Gavin has been playing Dragonville--a game--on it.
As he places the phone in Shawn's hand he says "Dad, you need to check in on the Love Dragons and see if they laid an egg."
"Okay, Gavin, I need to go to work" says Shawn trying to pull the phone towards him, but Gavin is still holding on.
"Then if they do lay an egg you should make sure to keep it warm and safe." Gavin adds.
Shawn is distractedly working on finding keys, his computer bag and his mind is already on work things as he nods absently to Gavin.
"Or .....maybe you should take the egg to the nursery.  That way you don't have to keep checking on the dragons."
"OK" replies Shawn looking at the concern in Gavin's eyes.  "Or how about I just log out of the game and you can log back in tonight and take care of it?" Shawn counters.
"OK......"says Gavin with some hesitation.  "But Dad, take good care of the phone at work today and don't use all the battery."

I Think I Am That Age--Old

A few years ago, the girls and I were talking with Shawn's mom, Priscilla.  She mentioned that she had just been to a great sale at Old Navy and picked up some thongs for the girls.  Jocelyn, about 14 at the time, says with exasperation in her voice, "Grandma,  you can't call flip-flops thongs.  Thongs are underwear for skanky girls."  Mental note--don't call them thongs it makes you look old.  And the new word for slutty is skanky.  Check.

Two days ago Shawn and I are chatting with Rissa, eating frozen yogurt (never to cold for fro-yo), and talking about college possibilities.  I suggest that she "hook up with John" a family friend who has just attended Utah State University, and see how he has liked it.
There is an audible gasp.  I look up from my fro-yo to see Rissa with her mouth hanging open.
"Mom!  Do you know what that means?"  Rissa inquires.
"uhhh....I am going to guess no, I don't."
"It means to make-out MOM!"

Identification Issues

Shawn has been wearing a beard for the past 6 years--pretty much Gavin's whole life.  This past week Shawn was called to serve on the High Council, and it was suggested that he shave his beard in an effort to emulate the First Presidency.  Sunday was Shawn's first week in our ward with no beard.

After church, Gavin and Shawn were talking in the kitchen.
"Dad.   I think you should let your beard grow back on."
"Really, Gavin?  Why do you think so?" Shawn asks.
"Well, I was looking for you in your classroom, and I couldn't find you."
"Oh, well I have a new classroom.  Next week I will show you where it is." Shawn replies.
"Okay.  Hey dad?  I tried to see you, but now everyone else looks like you.  Maybe they could grow beards?"

Christmas Tree Games

I hear a small crash in the other room.
"What was that?" I call out.
A meek reply is heard.  "It's okay Mom.  I caught the important one." replies Gavin.
This of course gets my immediate attention, and I start moving from my office to the family room where the tree is located.  I arrive just in time to see Gavin throw a bouncy ball into the top of the tree and jump to catch the ornament which is dislodged from it's position.
"What are you doing?"  I ask.
"Oh...uhh.... hey Mom."  he says adding a little smile.  "I made up a new game.  I throw the ball to knock off the ornaments.  But don't worry," he quickly reassures me, "I know the special ones are at the top and I always catch those before they hit the ground and break."

What's that Thing?

"Hey dad?"
"Yes, Gavin."
"Uhh...what's that thing that stings you?"
"A stingray?"
"No.  It is what the police men use to sting the bad guys."
"A taser?"
Gavin smiles..."Yeah!  Can we make one?"
"Sure, Gavin." Shawn says incredulously.
"Ok dad.  We'll get the stuff tomorrow."

Noises

When you hear a loud explosion sound at 4am, don't forget to check the freezer.
Gdog's response you ask?  "That's cool!  Can I stay up and watch it tonight?"

Why Do You Need That?

This morning I was off on my Saturday morning long run, when Shawn heard a noise in the garage.  Marissa was at a yearbook meeting, Tiffany at a swim meet so there was really only one possibility.
Shawn opened up the door and saw Gavin pulling things out of the tool box.
"What are you doing Gavin?" he asked.
"Looking for a crowbar" came the reply.
"OK. Why?" furthered Shawn
"I am trying to take some things off the van to make an RV." replied Gavin.

Gavin's Invention

Gavin talks all the time about cool things he can create.  I love when his mind gets going and I get a little glimpse into how he thinks.  He has been talking about cutting the "popcorn bowl" and attaching half of a horn to make a "cool thing that transports water" for his "village".  With dad's help, today he was able to realize this dream.  He even named it.  Listen closely and you can hear the name of his village, as well as, the name of his new invention.

Weekly Vocabulary Words

Gavin has vocabulary words each week as part of his homework.  He has to read the word, and then use it in a sentence.  On the first day of each week, we define each of the words.  Thereafter he has to remember the word and use it in a sentence.  One of the words this week is relief.  I asked him if he knew what that word meant.  He said "Yes.  When the car didn't hit me I thought; Hey!  That's a relief!"

I Spy!

On a road trip I hear Gavin instigating a game of I Spy with his sisters.
I hear Marissa take her turn..."I spy with my little eye something...... blue."   Gavin proceeds to guess the appropriately colored things.  The game continues passing back and forth between the two of them.
About 5 minutes into the game I over hear
"I spy with MY ENORMOUS, HUMONGOUS EYE that is POPPING OUT OF MY HEAD something ......"
Turns out each turn the eye got bigger and bigger so it could see more stuff that normal eyes couldn't see.

Thanksgiving in Grand Junction CO

This year we spent Thanksgiving with the Runyan clan.  Matt and Kristi invited everyone to Grand Junction and planned some really fun activities.
  • Hiking the National Monument
  • Football/soccer on a field that Matt created in his backyard.  It was about 1/2 the standard football length, and had painted lines including end zones.  Andrew--Hannah's new husband--commented the only thing it was missing was a big Y.
  • Turkey Trot (5K)
  • Dinner with all the trimmings--Blanca's special stuffing, Runyan mashed potatoes (Runyan version always implies more than twice what you can eat, and a lot of butter), homemade rolls, Christmas Jello(yes, a Thanksgiving tradition), cranberry/pecan jello, yams, green beans, Turkey--roasted and smoked...it was wonderful.  And took about 8 hours to make, 20 minutes to eat and an hour to clean up!  (The usual proportions of time for a Thanksgiving dinner.)
  • 9 different kinds of pie. (cherry creme, Swedish apple, pumpkin, tripple berry, apple, chocolate, banana creme, mincemeat, & pecan)
  • Shooting--target practice  (See the video)

  • Pheasant hunting
  • Team Charades and Pictionary
  • the Animal game
  • Jake, Andrew, Gavin and Razzy spent time hooked together via the internet and 3 computers playing Minecraft (courtesy of Uncle Kevin)

Andrew (Hannah's husband) brought his "spotter" and good friend from the Army, Nate.  It was fun to get to know him and to share our family traditions with him.  (Makes me worry even more about sending our troops to war...but that is another post!)

Thanks Matt and Kristi for letting us all invade and working out all the logistics.  And Becky and Archie, Randi and Kevin, Todd and Blanca, Mom and Dad for making it a priority to get together and bring all your family along.  It was a good time.  (Hopefully next time Nathan, Miriam, Rebekah, and JoAnna can be there too!)

When we got in the car to come home Gavin asked "Why can't we live in Grand Junction with Andrew and all our cousins?"  I commented that we can't all fit.  Gavin pointed out that "we just did and it worked great!"

Who I Have Become and Why?

Turning another year older I have been thinking about different stages of my life, and what has brought me to where I am today.  According to Dr. Phil, you can trace who you've become in this life to three types of external factors: 10 defining moments, 7 critical choices, and 5 pivotal people.

Ten Defining Moments: In every person's life, there have been moments, both positive and negative, that have defined and redefined who you are. Those events entered your consciousness with such power that they changed the very core of who and what you thought you were. A part of you was changed by those events, and caused you to define yourself, to some degree by your experience of that event.

Seven Critical Choices: There are a surprisingly small number of choices that rise to the level of life-changing ones. Critical choices are those that have changed your life, positively or negatively, and are major factors in determining who and what you will become. They are the choices that have affected your life up to today, and have set you on a path.

Five Pivotal People: These are the people who have left indelible impressions on your concept of self, and therefore, the life you live. They may be family members, friends or co-workers, and their influences can be either positive or negative. They are people who can determine whether you live consistently with your authentic self, or instead live a counterfeit life controlled by a fictional self that has crowded out who you really are.

I have been toying with this for a month or so, thinking about what possibly might be the ten, seven and five for me.  I thought over the course of the next year, I will try to define these moments, choices and people see if I can gain some insight into myself.  If you're reading this, I would love to know yours too,

Sing Loud!

Last night Marissa and I were in the office, calculating cupcake ingredients that she will need for the wedding reception she is catering this weekend.  We hear Gavin's voice from the other room...

"There's a place downtown....na na na around.....
take it off....na na na ...yeah take it off."

We start to laugh.  We look and find him dancing and singing on the couch.  (Reminds me of finding Tiffany dancing to Britney Spears Oops I Did It Again)
"What is that song?" I ask Gavin.
"Marissa and I like that song.  We listen to it when we get Icees."
I raise my eyebrows at Marissa.
"Kesha--Take It Off" she laughs.  "That is so funny he remembers it.  We listened to all kinds of songs."

We collect our lists and print-outs and head to the car.  As we are pulling out of the drive way--the garage door closing--Gavin rips open the house door and starts dancing and singing as loud as he can.  "There's a place downtown....na na na...take it off, people come around....free for all....yeah!"
The garage curtain closes.

Marissa says through her laughing tears...now there's a bolg-able moment.

Gratitude 2011

With Thanksgiving coming up this next week, I thought it appropriate to list some things I am grateful for.  Experts say it makes a difference when you write it down.  Because I know that my blog is more of a journal than a web page destination for others, this is pretty much for my benefit. I am not sure these are all in the correct order...but here is a list anyway;

1. My Family  I don't know what my life would look like without Shawn & my kids.  I love them so much.
Shawn: He has shown me the world, and opened my eyes to so many things, peoples, and cultures.  After 22 years, he knows to change the channel when the news has a story about child abuse so I won't have nightmares, he puts up with the early morning running & marathons, is willing to play country music occasionally because he knows I like it, brings me chocolate,  makes me laugh, balances my parenting(one minute IS late for curfew),  helps me laugh at myself, encourages me to pursue my passions, loves my family, plays Legos with Gavin, takes food supplies to Jocelyn @ college without being prompted, is appropriately amazed by Marissa's passion for cupcakes and people, challenges Tiffany to learn and think, goes to Lake Powell (because we love it), provides a home for us, gives priesthood blessings willingly, and stayed married to me even after he witnessed my competitive nature on the basketball court.  He tells me I am like "Modern Family's" Claire, and since she is cute and likes to run I take that as a compliment--although I think he means I am like her in the way that I think and parent.  He has taught me to be kinder, more patient and find a better balance in most aspects of my life.  I am a better wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend because of him.
Jocelyn: She is such a joy in my life.  Her free and kind spirit are like a light to a fire.  People are comfortable being themselves around her because she is comfortable with herself.  She writes stories that I love to read, and has a way with words that makes her a "facebook favorite" of my friends  She makes me laugh with the way she sees and notices things.  She has one of the strongest testimonies of the gospel, a fun competitive nature and inspires me to be better.
Marissa: She is the smile that warms an entire room.  She sees each person individually, makes emotional connections and has a HUGE desire to help others.  She is so talented in the kitchen.  Her willingness to try new things, and her work hard & play harder attitude make people love to be with her. She is not afraid to stand up for the underdog or for what is right--even when there are not others to stand with her-- she inspires me.
Tiffany:  Is intelligence and beauty in one.  She processes and thinks through more things in a day than anyone else I know.  She notices things that escape others, is willing to accept challenges and knows more about Ben10 and Star Wars the Clone Wars than any first grade boy in order to connect with her brother.  She encourages people around her to do their best and when she decides to do something there is no stopping her. I love to be with her and she inspires me to be a better person.
Gavin: He completed our family--even when we were unaware that it was lacking.  He is a free spirit, who sees the world in a unique way.  He is so curious and physically capable that he gets himself into all kinds of unusual situations.  He is confident enough to instigate conversations with kids & teachers at his school, 18year-old friends of Marissa's, Tiffany's swim coach, and Grandma's cardiologist, as though he is as mature, smart and wise as any of them.   He gives me loves, tells me I am the best mom, and makes me want to be better.
2. My parents, siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews.-- Three different times this week I have been told by different friends that I am so blessed to have the childhood I did.  The older I get the more I truly understand how great of a blessing that is.  Thank you Mom & Dad!  I love how close our family is.
3. The Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.  The decision to be an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, affects almost every aspect of my life--daily.  It helps me try to be a little better each day.
4. My Health  Running this past year with several friends that have sustained injuries, and knowing so many who struggle with health issues, this has to make the list.  I am so grateful for my health.
5. Simple Joys  A clean counter-top, smell of Gavin's head after a bath, clean sheets, Frozen Yogurt (had to get that in somehow), an opportunity to run or have lunch with friends.
6. A Home  More than a house, a place where my family and I feel safe, and sheltered from the world.  A place to gather, laugh and play.
7. Beautiful photography.  Probably because my mind is going...I appreciate a "snap-shot" into a moment in time.  I SERIOUSLY could look at pictures all day long.  (Kinda like Shawn feels about You-tube)
8. Cars and Gas to Fuel them  Because I come from a "truck driving family" (as Shawn describes our willingness to drive whatever distance at any time of day or night), a car that runs well and the ability to fuel the car to get to events and family makes my list.
9. Airplanes  Haven't they changed the world?  It is amazing how many things you can learn and understand better by simply putting yourself in a different place in the world.
10. The Internet Simply the greatest invention of my generation--and arguably of all time.  It has revolutionized the way we communicate, travel, live, and learn.

And there is so much more....

Our Darling Marissa is 18!

(Thank you Tiffany for the extra lighting!)

Oh my goodness how time flies!!  I remember thinking when I was pregnant with her;  "How will she ever compare with her older sister Jocelyn?"  And then she was born and I knew that she'd didn't need to be compared to her older sister, nor anyone else.  She could just be her own amazing Marissa.
